Medallion Screw Up

Here's another photo of that medallion I've been working on for ages. I had a terrible time getting the mane and forelock to look okay, and then with a bunch of other minor adjustments, I've concluded that I ruined it. I hadn't measured anything in a while, and now the cheek has blown up to giant proportions, the bridge of the nose is too big, and the neck is too thick (I think). It's supposed to be a Percheron or draft cross, but right now I think it looks like a pony. *Sigh* Back to the (sculpting) board...

Don't despair, it's not ruined Carol! If you cut the ear out and raised it up a bit to give back some depth to the head there, it would improve a whole bunch with just that small change! I don't think the cheek looks too large. You've put so much work into it, this is no time to declare defeat! Also, the nostril gives the impression of being viewed slightly from behind and that makes the muzzle appear turned away from the viewer while the rest is in straight profile. Try opening it up a little bit and I think you'll be pleased with the result! Are you working in soft clay? It looks like chavant, but I could be wrong. changing things around is a snap in soft clay, and even in wax based clays. give it a shot and keep on keeping on! :^) Kathi

Thank you so much for the help, Kathi! Yes, I am working in soft clay -- and I am still working on it ;-) I know sometimes I sound like I'm giving up in my posts, but that's not how I mean it, I'm just expressing my discouragement at my lack of abilities. I still continue on, knowing I'll eventually see progress...

I agree with Kathi, and I'm glad you're still working on it. :-D And hey, you have an open invite to my place any time if you want to bring something for a little sculpting day.
